Clean label Ingredients - 5 great examples leading the way!

Hello Foodie Friends,

Welcome to this week's GRATE Newsletter, where we dive into the rising "clean label" movement.

Have you downloaded any APP's for scanning both foods and cosmetics to flag up harmful nasties?? I've been using the app "Yuka" for the last few weeks, and I'm fascinated with what it has taught me. Do you know how your brand shows up on Yuka? Does it have any nasties hiding in there? I'd really encourage you to check it out.

With consumers increasingly wary of ultra-processed foods, the demand for products made with natural ingredients and minimal processing is soaring. Clean labels, which emphasise transparency and simplicity, are gaining traction as a symbol of health and sustainability. As the market is poised for significant growth, this trend presents a prime opportunity for food manufacturers.

The Clean Label Movement emerged as a response to the increasing complexity and opacity of product labels. In the early 21st century, as the processed food industry expanded, ingredient lists became laden with chemical additives, preservatives, artificial flavours, and sweeteners. Consumers, becoming more health-conscious and discerning, sought products with recognisable, natural, and minimally processed ingredients. This desire for transparency ignited the Clean Label Movement.

However, balancing clean label practices with exceptional taste remains critical. Are you ready to navigate this challenge and unlock new potential for your brand?

As always, enjoy the read and I look forward to chatting to you about this topic

YOUGH PIZZA WITH 2 SIMPLE INGREDIENTS (USA)

Better for you US dough brand, Yough, claims to have launched the first frozen pizza dough made with greek yoghurt and organic wheat flour in the US. Two ingredient pizza dough is not new, but it is in the frozen cabinet, and at a commercial scalable level. Yough has used the "clean label" trend as inspiration to develop its Greek yogurt-based dough which provides postbiotics, 30g of protein and under 500 calories. Founded by a group of friends with health-related dietary restrictions, Yough’s frozen products include cheese pizza, turkey pepperoni pizza, a plain crust for customizing and a tube of unshaped plain dough for more cooking options.

MACROOM BUFFALO BURRATA (IRELAND)

In our household, we absolutely love Macroom Buffalo Mozzarella’s Irish Burrata. GRAMMS LEMONADE PROTEIN WITH 5 SIMPLE INGREDIENTS(USA)

Gramms 'Lemonade Protein'  formula includes five simple ingredients, ensuring a clean and straightforward composition; this simplicity enhances the purity of the product and makes it easier to digest. Designed to be gut-friendly and easily absorbed, it features micro-filtered, lactose-free whey sourced from European farmers. This product caught my attention as it presents a clear and refreshing alternative to traditional protein supplements. By utilizing grass-fed whey protein isolate, this powder is filtered into a clear protein juice, offering a light and invigorating lemonade flavour. Each serving delivers 20g of protein, 0g of sugar, and 80 calories, making it a nutritious choice for those seeking a lower-calorie option. This product is catering to those who prefer a more refreshing and digestible protein source while maintaining high nutritional quality.

THAT'S IT SIMPLE FRUIT BARS (USA)

That’s It, a healthy snack bar company, embodies its commitment to transparency right in its name. Their entire product range follows a five-or-fewer ingredient rule, with their popular fruit bars containing just two. For example, their apple-strawberry bar lists '1 Apple + 12 Strawberries. That’s it.’ directly on the wrapper. With ingredients this simple, they proudly display the list on the front of the packaging. Dedicated to making healthy snacking easy and stress-free, they use only natural, non-GMO fruit and ensure their bars are free from the top 12 food allergens.

THANKS PLANTS (IRELAND)

Ireland-based Thanks Plants was founded in 2020, with the aim of offering clean-label meat alternatives made from recognisable whole food ingredients. Aisling Cullen, founder, is absolutely dedicated to creating handmade, wholesome, and flavourful plant-based products. The concept proved hugely popular with Irish consumers, and Thanks Plants’ products — made predominantly from seitan, legumes, and vegetables — are now available nationwide.
