Small Formats, Big Function: The Rise of Smart, Feel-Good Foods

Hello GRATE readers,

I’ve been away from the newsletter for a few weeks… I hope you didn’t miss it too much!

One week saw me on the slopes in Bulgaria, where I happily swapped trend reports for traditional dishes like Kavarma — slow-cooked chicken or pork simmered with peppers, onions and spices in a clay pot — and Sach, a generous pile of meats and vegetables served sizzling on a hot iron plate straight to the table. Comforting, abundant, deeply satisfying food.

Last week, I had the privilege of co-hosting our fourth annual BELEAF retreat for female founders. It’s always such a special few days — honest conversations, big ambitions, and a shared belief in building brands with purpose. Check out my reel, which captures the spirit.

And if you are interested in joining in 2027, be sure to register your interest.

But now, I’m back at the desk, catching up on the constant flow of trend shifts and new product launches. And one thing has really stood out this week. We’re seeing the rise of what I’m calling “Small Format, High-Function Foods.”

Consumers still want flavour. They still want fun. But increasingly, they also want control, clarity, and functionality — whether that’s supporting gut health, managing appetite, boosting protein, or simply making smarter portion choices.

Across categories, brands are responding with products that are:

  • Portion-aware

  • Functional by design

  • Nutrient-enhanced

  • Convenience-led

  • And culturally relevant

This isn’t diet culture 2.0. It’s about intentional eating in accessible formats.

Read on to see the five examples I am spotlighting this week.

As always, enjoy and be sure to reach out if you want to chat more on the topic.

MOOCHA WELL BLEND (NORTHERN IRELAND)

Moocha takes kombucha beyond the bottle. Instead of a ready-to-drink format, Moocha Well Blend is a powdered nutritional kombucha sachet combining live cultures, prebiotic fibres, digestive enzymes, and immune-supporting vitamins C and D. Designed by founder, Bronagh, it’s functionality in a highly convenient format — no refrigeration, no glass bottles, no sugar load. It reflects how gut health has moved from niche to daily ritual, and how consumers want portable, stackable wellness solutions. The range combines probiotics + prebiotics + enzymes — targeting multiple layers of digestive support. It also offers Immune-support claims backed by vitamins C and D, tapping into ongoing immune-conscious purchasing behaviour post-pandemic. This is microbiome management made simple.

CHICP FUNCTIONAL HUMMUS (UK)

Chicp spotted a gap in the UK market for a hummus that’s not just healthy, but actively functional — positioning itself as the UK’s only premium functional hummus brand. Rather than sticking to the traditional chickpea, water and tahini formula, the brand swaps water for aquafaba to naturally boost fibre and protein, and uses extra virgin olive oil instead of rapeseed oil to elevate quality. The new “Velvet” range introduces five flavours, including Truffle, Beetroot & Horseradish, Green Queen and Good Gut, the latter fortified with a seaweed-derived source of calcium. By upgrading a familiar fridge staple with gut-friendly credentials and indulgent flavour cues, ChicP makes functionality feel effortless rather than medicinal.

SARA LEE MINI CUPS (AUSTRALIA)

Single-serve Sara Lee Mini Cups have launched in Australia, offering a portion-controlled way to enjoy classic desserts without the full-sized commitment. Made with Australian cream and dairy, the range includes microwaveable options like French Vanilla Cheesecake and Ultra Chocolate Bavarian, alongside Golden Apple Crumble and Sticky Date Pudding ready in under a minute. It’s indulgence engineered for modern appetite awareness — giving consumers a convenient way to satisfy a craving while keeping portions in check. A clear example of how weight-wellness culture is reshaping even the most traditional dessert categories.

PORTION IQ - GLP-1 RANGE (UK)

Portion IQ, developed by Cambridge Nutritional Foods, is designed specifically for health-conscious consumers and those using GLP-1 medications who may be eating less but still require complete nutrition. The range spans shakes, soups, snacks and drinks, all formulated with balanced protein, fibre and essential micronutrients in carefully pre-portioned servings suited to smaller appetites. Backed by decades of nutritional expertise, the products aim to bridge the gap between reduced hunger and ongoing dietary needs. It reflects a growing shift toward precision-led, portion-controlled formats that support weight management without compromising nourishment.

M&S MINI MEALS

Marks & Spencer has been smart in recognising that not all appetites are created equal. Its Mini Meals range reflects growing demand for smaller, nutritionally balanced ready meals. This isn’t kids’ food. It’s adult, flavour-forward meals in scaled-down portions. In a world influenced by GLP-1 medications, mindful eating, and food waste concerns, smaller ready meals suddenly make commercial sense. Positioned as premium and satisfying — not “diet” food — protecting brand equity while adapting to appetite shifts. It signals that portion awareness has officially gone mainstream retail.
